Unlimited Minutes And Texts: Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, is to offer shorter, £20 per month (minimum 12 months) mobile phone contracts as it looks to speed up growth at its telecoms business. This contract provides 250 UK minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB per month data. However, the phone will cost £349 for the 16GB and £429 for the 32GB version. If users sign up to a two-year contract for £45 a month, although they can't get the phone for free, only have to pay £19 for the 16GB handset and can receive unlimited minutes and texts. Consumers Replace Handsets Every Year: David Taylor, Tesco Telecoms chief operating officer said the company believed the 12-month contracts would appeal to customers at a time when most mobile phone contracts run for 18 or 24 months. As Britain struggles to emerge from a deep recession, consumers are “really quite uneasy about signing up to a such a long-term financial commitment" as a two-year contract, he said in a telephone interview. He added, "Technology moves so quickly that many customers also want to replace their handsets every year and so being locked into a two-year contract doesn't meet their needs at all."
