Mobile phone firms to reduce call charges Britain’s mobile phone firms will be told this week to reduce call rates by a minimum of £1 billion per year. The decision has been taken after an analysis by Ofcom, the telecoms regulatory authority, regarding the rate of relating to different networks during calls. Providers are billing £2 billion as charges on a mutual basis. Rates have started to fall, however, issues prevail yet. This is because mobile termination charges lead to immense profits. Ofcom charges to fix As a trial to decrease charges upon users, Ofcom is thought to fix charges starting from 2011 till 2015, which will be found f rom 4p per minute to 2p maximum. The decision is being challenged by major providers like O2 as well as Vodafone, which argue that it will affect their growth and will never reflect less bills at all. With the merger of T-Mobile and Orange Britain is set to emerge as a big player in the European market. Ofcom's decision has been already held in high regards by BT that assumes that the additional charge of making calls to mobiles through landlines will be £750m per year.
