Maximum Mobile Usage Increases Risk of Brain Tumours: A landmark study includes some evidence that consumers holding long conversations on handsets are in increased risk of developing potentially fatal brain tumours. The Government is yet to update its health advice on the safety of mobile phones, which has not unchanged for four years despite increased usage in Britain particularly among children. ![]() The study was started by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the UN’s World Health Organisation, in 1998, the decade-long, continuous research by scientists in 13 countries with a funding of £15 million on Interphone project. Despite the time and expense involved in the scientific research, the data obtained are inconclusive and susceptible to error. Remedial Measure Should Take: Final results stated, “Pooling of data from Nordic countries and part of the UK yielded a significantly increased risk of glaucoma related to use of mobile phones for a period of 10 years or more on the side of the head where the tumour developed. ”Despite its limitations, Interphone remains the largest study carried out into the safety of mobile phones so health ministries worldwide and the billion-pound telecommunications industry are likely to rely heavily on its findings. The Department of Health suggests that children should be “discouraged” from making “non-essential” calls whilst adults should “keep calls short”. As a remedial measure, other countries have urged users to buy hands-free sets or send texts rather than making calls, or to ban advertising of phones aimed at children. Make Cheap International Calls: Consumers may want to consider making cheap international calls with mobile phones or landlines. As making international calls is also a hassle free process. Simply add the access number and the country code and make desired calls at your convenient time. |
